With bags of space, numerous 'Simply Clever' features, intelligent safety systems and low fuel consumption the new ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback is sure to impress. The Spaceback takes a much sharper form than the hatch model and is surprisingly 18cm shorter in length. Its shape can be considered an intriguing half-hatchback, half-estate; however the Spaceback does hold a distinctly stylish look. The Rapid Spaceback's dynamic silhouette is marked by clear lines, a long wheelbase (2,602 mm) and a sharp, high tornado line.
With a range of customisation options available, drivers can enhance the appearance of their Spaceback by opting for the style pack which includes a panoramic tinted glass roof that stretches from one end of the passenger compartment to the other alongside 17-inch alloy wheels and additional glass in the rear hatch. This new model features various advancements from the regular Rapid, including a re-modelled multi-function steering wheel and a niftier stereo system, as well as new trims and different seat fabrics. The Rapid Spaceback also has electro-mechanical power steering rather than a hydraulic set-up, and boasts revised damper settings ensuring a smoother ride.
With the best passenger space in its class, this car enjoys copious capacity, where interior space is not jeopardised even with the optional panoramic glass roof in place. The Spaceback offers a large amount of front and rear headroom, while rear passengers also benefit from more knee room than normal, with 415 litres of space with the rear seats in place and 1380 litres with them folded. Other desirability's include practical touches, such as a hi-vis vest pocket underneath the driver's seat, an ice scraper in the fuel filler flap, and a double-sided base in the cars boot which boasts fabric on one side and a wipeable surface on the other.
In addition, the interior cabin features aluminium-effect plastic highlights on the dashboard, giving the inside a more exclusive look. All models get air-conditioning, remote central locking, electric front windows, a height-adjustable driver's seat and an alarm, while mid-spec SE variants add body-coloured door handles and mirrors, alloy wheels, a glove box, a multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors, cruise control, front fog lights and electric rear windows.
As with all ŠKODA models, safety is paramount. Spaceback models will come with front, side and head airbags, height-adjustable three-point safety belts with pre-tensioners and height-adjustable head restraints. ABS and ESC systems will also be available as standard.
Other active safety features available include, Front fog-lights with cornering functionality (standard on the Elegance trim) and Hill-hold control (standard on SE and Elegance trims - DSG models only).
Available with a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines, the TSI petrol will boast a blend of power and torque combined with low CO 2 and impressive fuel economy, whilst the 1.6 TDI CR 90PS GreenTech diesel engine emits only 104g/km of CO2.
