The McLaren 650S Spider has truly redesigned the face of the supercar market, delivering the ultimate in driving experience both on the road and on the track. The ownership experience of a McLaren 650S Spider is one which will be truly as magnificent as the car itself.
Every detail of the McLaren 650S Spider has been meticulously designed to create a breath-taking car that generates thrills of excitement every time you set eyes on it whether the roof is up or down. The 650S Spider really comes to life when its roof comes down and handling is as sharp and thrilling as in the 650S Coupe. With one simple push of a button the retractable hardtop roof seamlessly folds into the bodywork at the back of the car in less than 17 seconds and can be done at speeds of up to 19mph.
Normally the weight contribution of a convertible roof is enough to completely change the performance dynamics of a car however McLaren's engineers have achieved a design which weighs only 40kg which has so little impact on the cars centre of gravity that the Spider can cut corners as sharp as the McLaren 650S Coupe. The 650S Spider is capable of reaching an incredible top speed of 204mph which is just 3mp less than the Coupe and the drag increase with the roof down is only increased by a minimal 3%.
Drivers can choose from a selection of stunning hand mixed paint which gives the 650S Spider a flawless finish, exaggerating every line, curve and contour of the car while keeping weight to a minimum thanks to the special Formula 1 inspired paint technology. High-grip Pirelli P Zero Corsa System tyres not only look amazing but enhance the performance of the car allowing for greater cornering, traction and braking capabilities. Striking LED lights decorate the front and rear of the car and thanks to special LED technology they produce less current which saves on fuel and CO2.
The exclusive Carbon Black Alcantara interior has been designed to maximise driving pleasure and comfort and has been fitted with the latest innovative technology. The bespoke interior can be personalised with a variety of colour trims and fabrics giving each 650S Spider its own personal touch.
The seven-speed dual clutch gearbox can be controlled by the Formula 1 inspired rocker shift paddle which sits on the simplistically designed race-crafted steering wheel.
The rear glass of the 650S Spider can be lowered with the roof still up and passengers can enjoy the roar of the twin-turbo V8 engine without being subjected to excess wind buffeting which is also minimised when the roof is fully down as the screen automatically adjusts to an aerodynamic position. With the roof lowered the climate in the car is also controlled as fans alter their speed and airflow to maintain the desired temperature of the cabin while the Meridian audio system ensures an uninterrupted audio experience by adjusting volume levels and the tone of individual speakers.
At the core of the 650S Spider sits a carbon fibre MonoCell, a light and strong structure which gives the car the fantastic feeling of being so close and connected with the road. Weighing just 75kg this MonoCell is lighter and stronger than steel or aluminium making the car a lot safer and capable of supporting the cars thrilling dynamics.
The stunning contours of the 650S were created thanks to hundreds of hours or wind tunnel testing. Every single curve, crease and intake of the 650S has been honed to improve the aerodynamic performance of the car. Traction and downforce are enhanced thanks to the low front which accelerates airflow below the car and the rear diffuser which mean the harder you drive the 650S Spider, the more it sticks to the road. McLaren's innovative Brake Steer technology has also been incorporated to control the car when braking at speed, allowing the full ability of the stunning 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8's engine to be unleashed. The rear of the 650S Spider houses a carbon fibre active airbrake giving drivers the confidence to exploit the astonishing speeds and performance that the car can achieve.
The all-aluminium, twin-turbocharged, 3.8 litre V8 engine is unlike any other on the road and can reach an outstanding 8500rpm with 95% of the phenomenal 678Nm torque obtained between 3000 and 7000 rpm. The M838T also offers a refined drive at lower speeds and produces extraordinary fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.
Three different driving modes, Normal, Sport and Track, are available to select on the Active Dynamic Panel allowing the driver to tailor the 650S Spider in different driving environments. A full media, communications and entertainment system comes as standard with an optional IRIS system which adds state of the art navigation and an impressive seven-speaker Meridian audio system.
